Works Expo SPARK Award

Works Expo currently specialise in the creation and application of large-format graphic designs and the manufacture of customised exhibition display systems. Operating in a highly competitive market, they realised that as their competitors were actively seeking expansion opportunities, they could not afford to stand still. They decided on a bold move - to make a leap into electronic display technology.

They applied successfully to the Integrated Products Manufacturing Knowledge Transfer Network for a SPARK award, funded on this occasion by the South West Development Agency. It provided them with £5,000 of funds to kick-start the project. Working with the Centre for Electronic Product Engineering at the University of Glamorgan, they investigated the possibility of using electroluminescent-display technology because of their need for lightweight construction and physical flexibility.

After due consideration, however, they opted instead for thin-film-transistor displays as electroluminescent displays proved not to be conducive to creating the practical proposition that Works Expo had in mind. The project partners also looked at the various IT platforms suitable for their application, security and integrity being paramount.

The project was extremely successful and provided the potential for a market-leading project. Works Expo are now considering their options for future development and for product marketing.

Calls for SPARK proposals are announced annually on this website. If you would like to receive announcements in advance by email, we recommend you complete the online registration form and indicate your interest in SPARK awards by ticking the box in the interests section.
